Being the bleeding edge early adopters we are, we’ve
These reports are promising, but I’m starting to wonder what they promise to deliver, and the title ‘Social’ may be somewhat misleading.
To really get the most out of ‘social interaction tracking’, we need to have a look at our other interactions on the site. Google +1 is currently a very, very small piece of our social offering.
To this end, I’ve read google’s instructions for tracking all the other social interactions on the website. This seems to consist of placing another flavour of event tracking code around each and every one of those interactions!
I may take the time to set that up on this blog, but at work we’re talking about 22 languages and students from over 100 countries. We’re talking about vKontakte and Orkut among many others, not just Facebook and Twitter.
To manage this complexity, we
use AddThis who offer a very nifty service, automatically detecting the user’s preferences and making it easy for them to share
us, bookmark us, like us etc. AddThis have even enabled us to add Google +1 with minimum fuss and effort!
I’m speaking to AddThis this week and will definitely be talking about this, but I’ll be amazed if Google Analytics works alongside our Addthis integration. Many people are in the same boat I’m sure, using a service to generate these links rather than coding it themselves on their websites. With the variety out there and pace of change, it makes perfect sense to use a service.
While it would be great to have all my onsite reporting in one place for convenience, I’m struggling to see what the advantage really is to google’s social reporting. It seems to me that, out of the box and for my organisation, it’s a great way to report benefit from google products and not much else!
Luckily, AddThis Analytics is actually great for our needs and tells me everything i want to know about these shares and clickbacks. What AddThis can’t report that google can is tantalising. What effect are these +1s going to have on natural search traffic? Exciting times to be a marketer!
Has anyone had a chance to look at these reports yet? I’d love to hear your first impressions? Are you going to set up google’s social tagging on your ‘other’ social interactions?
Oh, and you might see some links on this page you would like to click on, just for research purposes of course 😉
